ANN DRAKE has been a psychotherapist since 1972 and a shamanic practitioner since 1992. In the seventies and early eighties Ann worked in a feminist therapy collective with women who had experienced physical, sexual, and emotional trauma. During this period she worked to define new models of treatment that went beyond the overmedication and long hospitalizations that were common at that time.
Ann received a doctorate in clinical psychology school at the Antioch/New England School of Professional Psychology in 1989. Upon graduation, Ann joined the faculty in the doctoral program at Antioch. In addition to teaching, she maintained a private practice, wrote articles, and gave talks and workshops. She went to Borneo in 1992 and met a shamanic healer who transformed her life.
Ann was initiated into the Unani tradition of shamanic healing by the Bomoh, a wise and gifted healer. Upon her return, she has devoted herself to the study and practice of shamanism and has worked towards a clinical and theoretical synthesis of psychology and shamanism. The results of her healing work have been so powerful and dramatic that she has written a book, Healing of the Soul: Shamanism and Psyche, and offers workshops and trainings for those who wish to seek an integration of the shamanism with western psychological thought. Ann’s second book, The Energetic Dimension: Understanding our Karmic, Ancestral and Cultural Imprints is scheduled to be released in November 2019.
